PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Problem

I had the pleasure of working on the Star Wars app, and as a self-proclaimed Star Wars nerd, I took great pleasure in stuffing the app full of easter eggs and features for our guests. Over the years, the Star Wars universe continued to expand with new movies and shows, drawing legions of fans and generating exciting new brand partnerships, leading to a surge in traffic. Our selfie feature, however, was showing its age. We needed a solution that could handle the increased user base and offer a fresh way for fans to engage with the feature.

The Goal

Our mission was twofold: add the functionality for people to scan exclusive promotional selfie filters and revamp the selfie feature for a better user experience. This meant ensuring the app could handle additional promotional material for future opportunities to capture the essence of the latest Star Wars content. But with meticulous planning, user-centric design, and, of course, the force, we were confident we could help fans celebrate their love for the galaxy far, far away in a whole new way.

RESEARCH

Charting the Course

Imagine a young fan who just finished watching The Mandalorian. They open the Star Wars app, eager to transform themselves into Grogu’s adorable bounty-hunting guardian. Our user stories focused on these journeys, detailing how fans would navigate the updated app to access new selfie features. Flow charts also helped us visualize how our users might interact with the app, giving us empathy and insight into the pain points they might encounter. Additionally, we conducted a thorough competitive analysis to understand the landscape and identify opportunities where our app could shine like a Nubian Royal Starship.

IDEATE

A Blueprint of the Galaxy

Before unleashing the full design, we created detailed wireframes to map out the user experience. These wireframes showed the app’s layout, highlighting where users would find the updated selfie feature and how they would interact with it. This step ensured a smooth, intuitive flow for capturing those epic Star Wars selfies.

FINESSE

May the Selfie Be With You

Drawing inspiration from the latest Star Wars UI and Prism design system, we constructed a visually captivating selfie experience for Force-sensitive fans of all ages. This update empowered users to effortlessly capture selfies adorned with exclusive filters and frames showcasing iconic characters, legendary locales, and formidable vessels. Imagine taking a selfie with Baby Yoda peeking out of your backpack or battling TIE fighters on your commute to work! The final design aimed to spark joy and let fans fully immerse themselves in the Star Wars galaxy.
